Alpaca Gestation Table

A GESTATION TABLE FOR ALPACA'S? NOW THAT MIGHT JUST COME IN HANDY!! Alpaca Gestation Tablpdf.

Please feel free to download and print this table.  We found it mighty handy ourselves for planning and birthing purposes.  Our farm is located in SW Michigan so we really can only count on dependable weather from May 15th through Nov. 15th.  The "greyed out" portion would be the area we try to stay out of as best we can.

A NOTE ABOUT FIELD BREEDING:

One might ask, well can you or can't you, there is no such thing as being half pregnant!  True enough, however given the time of year some of our females have given birth (Early or Late); this could get them into what we call a "pasture breeding" criteria.  We would put them in with one of our males, and we might not actually get a firm date on that breeding until we observe the female "spitting off" the male.  This would give us our first indication that a breeding has likely taken place.  This breeding method has been used successfully for the cattle/sheep/goat industry for years and also has its place in our breeding program.

A NOTE ABOUT SELECTIVE BREEDINGS:

A selective breeding is one where we have chosen a very specific time and place to breed an open receptive female to a herd sire.  This is not to say we do not look at EPD's and Cross-Breeding potential when we field breed.  On the contrary, we have already found acceptable matches for those dames who will be field bred.  This is just a very specific match pair which we may want to keep a close eye on during copulation.  Possibly, a first time maiden, or an unproven male which we just want to make sure is able to get the job done satisfactorily without any injury to himself or the female alpaca.BOF_Alpaca Gestation Tablpdfe.
